HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE CHURCH

The church had its inception in the 1930’s at 22 Oxford Road in Spanish Town, St. Catherine under the name “Bible Church of God” and under the leadership of Elder Jonathan Riley.

In 1962 it was relocated to its present address - 25 Nugent Street with a small group of members, where the construction of an edifice had begun under the skilled hands and supervision of Bp. Nehemiah Levy.

The year 1963 was a new beginning for the church when its name was officially changed from “Bible Church of God” to “Church of God of Prophecy” after having formed an affiliation with the International headquarter of the Church of God of Prophecy in Cleveland, Tennessee, in the United States of America, under the leadership of the General Overseer Bp. A.J. Tomlinson.

On June 16, 1968, the edifice was completed and dedicated to the glory of God. Since its inception, the church has chronicled several transitions in its polity, and leadership, including that of being shepherded by seven Pastors and one Associate Pastor, who have all served with distinction, namely:

Elder Jonathan Riley (1961–1975)
Bishop Nehemiah Levy (1975 –1976)
Bishop Enoch Cornwall (1976–1985)
Bishop Nathan Taylor (1985–1995) and (1998 – 2003)
Bishop Alvin Moss (1995–1998)
Bishop Winston Leith (2003-2009)
Deacon Kenneth Richards (2003-2009)    (Associate Pastor)
Bishop Vincent Harvey (2009- present)

During its nearly 80 years of existence, the Church of God of Prophecy 25 Nugent Street has experienced significant physical, numerical, and spiritual growth and development through its various ministries and outreach efforts. It has produced many ministers and leaders who have served and are still serving the wider church at the international, national, and local levels.

Ministry areas which once stood at five (5) major ministries namely – Victory Leaders Band (VLB); Women’s Missionary Band (WMB); Assembly Band Movement (ABM); Church of Prophecy Markers Association (CPMA); and Sunday School, have been increased to over thirty (30) functional ministries with significant restructuring, name change and development to the major ministries.

With the increase in numerical growth and ministry activities of the church over the years, the need arose for more space. The church embarked on various fundraising efforts over time, to acquire adjoining properties.  The original structure has now been expanded to include – two executive offices, one general office, Children’s Church area equipped with whiteboards, television, and three bathrooms; a fully furnished kitchenette, a hall, storerooms, and a parking area. The acquisition of a more modern mixing system, microphones, and multimedia screens also form a part of our expansion.

The Church of God of Prophecy, 25 Nugent Street, is committed to be guided by the Vision, Mission and Core Values of the National Church, to impact the communities it serves and fulfill the central mandate of the Church which is based on the Biblical principle - to go, teach, preach and make disciples of all men.
